Most of the tips are what I consider common sense but I guess some people haven't thought of them. I was a bit annoyed though by comments like "...TV has the same effect on your brain that eating potato chips has on your body." And "TV isn't even that enjoyable; giving it up will allow you to discover other activities that you enjoy even more, and which are better for your brain". That's a subjective statement. To many people TV is enjoyable and there is nothing wrong with that. TV can even be educational. I also didn't appreciate the thrown in comments about milk, juice, soft drinks and meat being bad for me. I'll read a nutrition book for that info, thank you.

His advice of rolling down the car window instead of running the A/C is inaccurate. The drag produced by rolling down the windows reduces your gas mileage, so there is no savings.

Also, I think the paragraph on car maintenance has an error because he says "It can be tempting to spend money on your car when there seemingly isn't anything wrong with it". I think he means "it is tempting to NOT spend money on your car".

It is short and to the point, which is a good thing.

92 Easy Ways to Save Money Simple Practical Tips for Saving Money Getting Out of Debt Fixing Your Credit and Living Financially Free SP Vernon 9781449963743 Books Reviews

Very basic and simplistic. Good advise if you are not in the know. Ok for a freebie. Sometime reiterating those things that are commonly know helps you refocus.
This is a solid, little book full of useful ideas and different ways to save money. This book is short but that doesn't mean it lacks substance. To me this book was perfect for the quick ideas that can get me moving in the right direction. With some ideas I needed to do more research but with others it was just enough information to motivate me to do the right thing.
This book features a long list of money saving tips that anyone can use. Some of them are more obvious in nature (like clipping coupons or buying on clearance) but there are others I had not really thought about. If you take many of these tips and mesh them together, you can really affect your bottom line. In this economy, it's important to save money where you can! This book is for people who really want a list of ideas rather than an in depth look at budgeting or anything of that nature. But if you are looking for ways to save money, this book will be a handy tool for you.
1. Do not buy a kindle. 2. Do not pay retail price for a book. 3. Frequent your local library. 4. Checkout Salvation army thrift stores (and others). 5. Find (Or set up) a book exchange.
Quickly read and easy to understand. Packed with some really practical ideas for saving money. Would recommend this book to anyone having a hard time in this present economy.
Very informative and easy to read in one sitting. The author seems to know what he's talking about. Good points!
There will probably be some new ideas here. On the other hand, if you have been actively trying to save money, most of this is information you have already heard and are likely using. I did not learn anything new or unique. Some of it is a bit repetitive, and some of it is downright wrong- the idea that everything is cheaper when you buy in bulk is simply not true. Instead of blindly buying the biggest package you can, a truly frugal person will take the time to look at the per unit price, something this author never even mentions once. That is a really glaring error.
Another disturbing "tip" was to sneak candy and beverages into the movie theater, even purchasing a large handbag to make this easier to do. This is highly unethical. There are signs all over most theaters advising that outside food and beverages are prohibited. So, the advice is to break the rules. Not only can you get thrown out if caught, but look at the message this sends your children. Do you want them to grow up believing that rules only apply when you want them to? A much better solution would be to eat before going to the movies so that you would not be tempted by candy, soda and popcorn in the first place. The author never even mentions this very effective strategy.
The author also gives a blanket endorsement for buying extended warranties. In reality, these warranties vary greatly in terms of value for the money, but not once is that mentioned. This can actually cost you a lot of money without getting any real benefit. There are a lot of warranties not worth the paper they are written on, with limitations, exclusions and requirements designed to make it impossible to collect on them. In many cases, if you put what you would pay on a warranty into savings you will come out ahead. This is an area where research is necessary, yet the author never makes mention of that. Just buy the warranty.
"Overdraft Protection" works very differently at most banks than in his description. If you do not have overdraft protection and you attempt to go past your available balance, the transaction will simply be declined. If you have overdraft protection, the transaction will go through, and you will incur the charge. Your bank may be different, though, so make sure you know all the details before signing up for such a program. What the author describes sounds more like linking accounts than "overdraft protection." Since unethical banking practices have been feeling the pinch, a lot of renaming and repackaging has been going on. Make sure that you don't get tricked. The bank is not there to help you, but to make money off you. Never forget that fact.
I also laughed at the quaint notion that cable TV costs $20. I don't know of anyone who only pays that little. However, compared to other forms of entertainment, television is certainly cheaper than going out to the movies and is very enjoyable for most. It is a very strange notion that doing without television is an easy (or even good) thing, or that a family does not need entertainment or news programming. As another reviewer noted, the value judgement of the author on this subject was inappropriate. Someone truly frugal would have pointed out the many less expensive alternatives to cable and satellite, like Roku, Apple TV and others and not scolded the reader as if they had done something terribly wrong by wanting to be entertained and informed. I wonder what decade that particular "tip" was written for.
The notion that "Kids are Cheap" drew a hearty laugh. Perhaps the author is talking about Amish children, but most kids I know grow out of the "cheap" stage around four. Try giving your kids empty boxes for Christmas and be entertained by the riot that ensues. Maybe you can do without television, after all...
When all is said and done, the information in this book could easily have been obtained by reading the magazines in the average doctor's waiting room- another money saving idea... They're free!
