I wish he had written more about his wife (who is the title character) and her inner life instead of so much on minor celebrities of the 1890's and the next few decades. Most of these names have lost all import after a century. Endless lists of names without description. Similar to Bok's autobiography, but less informative.
I would estimate that nearly half the book is name dropping and place dropping. The best part of the book concerned his wife, his parents, his children, and his obvious (to 21st century readers) bipolar personality.
A better title for this book would have been places I have visited and wealthy persons who have invited me to dinner over the course of 30 years.
What I have read to review is the BOOK form of this which
was published in 1926 (2nd edition I believe ) and is 399 pages.
Grosset & Dunlap were the publishers.
A beautiful book. The author Hamlin Garland (1860-1940) was
a short story writer,poet,and avid traveler.
This particular book (1st half) covers some of his travels to the western states
and to Europe. He makes detailed observations,does drop a few names
like,a young Theodore Roosevelt,and overall is a keen observer of people,
places and things.
The part of the book I liked the most was after he married his wife (they had two
daughters) and his stories relating to his home life with them. An interesting
observation that the author noted and I have noticed in books written by "old timers"
(people who were born and lived in the 19th century) is that,even a twenty year
absence can change EVERYTHING. The childhood home is NO longer recognizable !
This is true today. It is the passage of time and nothing can stop it.
I do not like this large format. I reordered the book in a regular book size
This edition had many typographical errors and was very unreadable. Why even try to sell such an edition is my question?
This is a poorly edited copy of the original book that I plan to return. This edition's unprofessional print job with its inappropriately placed words, characters, chapter headings and titles, interrupts the story's flow, distracting from and diminishing the enjoyment of reading an interesting, well-told story.
I enjoyed both this book and The Son of the Middle Border. This was finally a readable, very good edition; I had ordered two other editions previously, which were terrible editions and which I was able to return.
Author Hamlin Garland tells you about his life in the late 1890's and it's very informative. Garland was a man who made his living by writing, which was unlike anyone else in his family, who were farmers breaking the new sod of the Dakotas. I was surprised to know how much he traveled via trains. He was quite an explorer with a curiosity that took him all over the United States and the Alaskan territory. He even went to Europe, all the while gathering knowledge and information for his next writings. He actually meets and marries his wife in this book. If you like history and want to know what life was like prior to the turn of the century, this is a good, easy read.
